Neumann TLM 102 vs Neumann TLM 103: Head-To-Head

The often compared Neumann TLM 102 vs the TLM 103 broken down side by side. Both are great microphones and produce a lively sound quality in a condenser mic for digital recording. However, there are some notable differences between the two that should be reviewed.

Similarities

  • Used for all kinds of audio recording applications from woodwinds to strings to vocalists and voice.
  • Both are built for use on the go and portable but also able to be more stationary in a studio setting.

What is the difference?

  • 102 sounds flatter with more of a focus on midrange frequencies. Sounds thicker.
  • Brighter top end frequencies on the 103.
  • 103 is heavier. 103 weighs 450g vs the 102 weighing 210g
  • The 102 edges over the 103 slightly in total harmonic distortion.
  • 103 has a larger diaphragm. The 102 uses a diaphragm similar to the TLM 170 compared to the 103 using a diaphragm design more similar to the U87.
  • 102 has a slight edge in portability for live shows and concert applications but really both models were made with this in mind and consideration.

  • Bigger and heavier than the 102 model.
  • Addressing this microphone from an angle may take the edge off of some of the higher frequencies.

What do users say?

Some prefer the brighter top end quality of the 103 while others say the top end sounds harsh on the 103. I’ve seen and heard people say that the 102 is more natural sounding. This will be a matter of preference and the application that you are using the condenser microphone for. The value punch on the 102 has been the difference maker for a lot of buyers, but not all.
